چکیده

A membership service is used in a distributed system to maintain information about which sites are functioning and which have failed at any given time. Such services have proven to be fundamental for constructing distributed applications, with many example services and algorithms defined in the literature. Despite these efforts, however, little has been done on examining the abstract properties commonly guaranteed by membership services independent of a given implementation. Here, a number of these properties are identified and defined. These properties range from agreement among sites on membership changes, consistent ordering of change notifications, and timing properties to various ways for dealing with recoveries and partitions. Message ordering graphs, which are an abstract representation of the set of messages at each site in the system and their potential delivery order, are used to define the properties. Dependency graphs, which are a graphical representation expressing when a property is defined assuming the existance of another property or when a stronger property includes a weaker property, are used to illustrate the relationships between properties. These graphs help differentiate existing services, as well as facilitate the design of new configurable services in which only those properties actually required by an application are included. Finally, a number of existing membership services are characterized in terms of the properties identified.

Young children's understanding of multiple object identity: appearance, pretense and function.

Evidence from theory-of-mind tasks suggests that young children have substantial difficulty thinking about multiple object identity and multiple versions of reality. On the other hand, evidence from children's understanding of pretense indicates that children have little trouble understanding dual object identity and counterfactual scenarios that are involved in pretend play. Two studies report...

Comparison and Evaluation of Edge Detection using Fuzzy Membership Functions

Digital image processing is widely used by many research oriented fields. Edge detection method is one of the important techniques in image segmentation, which is used to find out exact position of objects in the given image. Edge detection can be achieved by various approaches such as Canny, Prewitt, Sobel, etc. Fuzzy Logic techniques have been used in image understanding applications such as ...

The Covering Problem

An important endeavor in computer science is to understand the expressive power of logical formalisms over discrete structures, such as words. Naturally,"understanding"is not a mathematical notion. This investigation requires therefore a concrete objective to capture this understanding. In the literature, the standard choice for this objective is the membership problem, whose aim is to find a p...

The Evolving Meaning and Influence of Cohort Membership

This study examined the experiences of 13 graduate students enrolled in a closed, lock-step master’s degree of the education cohort program. Interview and observational data, collected over 10 months and across four courses, were qualitatively analyzed to explore students’ understanding of the meaning of cohort membership and how that membership both shaped their educational experience and the ...

Enhanced Multivariable TS Fuzzy Modeling with Multivariable Fuzzy Sets without Decomposition

Enhanced fuzzy modeling by multivariable fuzzy membership functions is described. From the interpretability issues viewpoint conventionally fuzzy modeling is carried out by means of decomposition of multivariable membership functions via projections on each variable component. However, due to decomposition there involves an error while reconstructing the model output from the contributions of e...

The role of delinquency, proactive aggression, psychopathy and behavioral school engagement in reported youth gang membership.

Given the robust positive association between gangs and crime, a better understanding of factors related to reported youth gang membership is critical and especially since youth in gangs are a universal concern. The present study investigated the role of delinquency, proactive aggression, psychopathy and behavioral school engagement in reported youth gang membership using a large sample of 1027...
